D.J. couldn't believe he'd been taken away without a fight. But the intruder had her gunand probably one of his own. If McCall had been kidnapped, where had he been taken?
There was a frightening truth she didn't want to contemplate but she knew she had to consider: Someone wanted McCall dead. They didn't want to kidnap him. If they'd found him, they wouldn't have taken him anywhere alive, or if they had, they wouldn't have let him live for long.
She bit her lip until the pain made the panic recede enough so she could think. The lack of blood in the house soothed her a bit. McCall hadn't been killed inside this cabin. But that didn't mean he hadn't been killed in the woods. Still, she'd heard no shotand she knew very well how loud a gunshot could be in the stillness of the forest.
How had the men who had stalked them found her father's cabin? The only people who knew she'd come here were her father and Danny. She hadn't spoken with Captain Miller or Lou since the fiasco in Outgamie and still someone seemed to know their every step before they took it. Lou knew about her father's cabin. She'd trust Danny with her lifeand her father, too, she supposed. But it wasn't just her life she was talking about now. It was McCall's, too, and she wasn't sure she was willing to trust anyone with his life.
D.J. made a disgusted sound deep in her throat. She hated this feeling. Suddenly she trusted no onenot her boss, not her partner, not her childhood friend, not even her sole surviving parent. If
